Lost Life Skills – Our Youth Are Not Being Taught Necessary Life Skills

Today’s kids are not getting the life skills needed in school to navigate life; and it is a growing concern. While schools focus on academic subjects like math and science, many vital life skills are being overlooked. The ability to effectively communicate, problem-solve, and manage personal finance are essential for success in the real world, not to mention basic trade skills such as carpentry, plumbing, electricity, survival, etc.

Unfortunately, these skills are not given the attention they deserve and are leaving a generation ill prepared for life.

One reason why kids are not learning life skills in school is the heavy emphasis on standardized testing. Schools are under immense pressure to ensure students perform well on these tests, tests that were created long ago and not updated for today’s changing world. As a result, there is limited time and resources available to teach life skills.

While basic academics such as math, reading, English are important, it is also crucial to find a balance that allows schools to prioritize both academic excellence and the development of important life skills.

Furthermore, there is a lack of awareness among educators and policymakers about the importance of teaching life skills in schools. It is often assumed that these skills will be acquired naturally outside of the classroom. However, this assumption neglects the reality that not all students have access to opportunities that help them develop these skills.

At Jump-In, we have prepared a program that will teach students the necessary basic skills to maintain a household, make basic repairs to homes and cars, troubleshoot problems, learn basic survival skills and foraging with an emphasis on building confidence in a Christ-centered environment.

Jump-In takes a more proactive role in teaching life skills, ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have an equal chance at success in life, even a jump start.
